Draco drums where designed as a more affordable drop in solution that is easy to use. Initial price of a drum was always very expensive and then there were the hidden costs of plumbing a standalone unit in, usually involving lots of expensive 4 inch pipe and just the pure hassle of having to move everything around to physically fit them in to any existing system. Sometimes this scenario alone ruled out drum installs for most. Also there seems to be a bit of an “arms race” of extra features going on and on face value this seems to make them more complex for the user to install and use. There must be a simpler way.

From the absolute start, Draco Drums where designed to fit in the front of an ERIC filter to replace the subjectively high maintenance brush box system used in these units. The brief was to come up with a product that could drop in without a single modification to the original filter. It then had to be extremely easy to “wire up” and commission and then it had to be easy to maintain, with everything easily replaceable. It also had to have all the features needed to make a drum work but keep it within the chassis of the drum to allow it to be installed in almost any situation, no matter how tight.

The result is a drum that not only fits in an ERIC filter, but fits the 300 series Nexus units and single inlet vortexes over 33 inches in Diameter. We are also looking at multi chamber units but on a case by case basis as there are so many different types. Spring 2016 will see the introduction of a standalone unit and a smaller drum for nexus 200 series filters and smaller vortexes and larger multibays.

Draco Drum C30/340 Combi Unit

There are 3 different sized combination filters. These all have the drum and the biological chamber built into the same unit. Drawing on the experience and knowledge from our commercial development and collaborations we have transferred it to our range of smaller filter products to aid the modern water keeper. The engineering and understanding of how filtration works was developed to produce the Combi range of filters. Fully curved base to eliminate corners that allow bacterial and debris build up. Because of the clever design concept, the full length of the units (including under the drum unit), are utilised within the bio area. Thereby allowing the system to provide the maximum capacity to floor space without losing it to unutilised volume.

Features:

  • Full length (utilises space under drum), diverted and downward flow, curve base biological chamber
  • Sloped and slotted base to drum chamber, to eliminate bio media clogging and particle buildup in this area
  • Split screen for easy access to the middle of the drum and easy bypassing of the unit
  • Quick release/change UV Resistant DPM Drum Seal
  • External short shaft, rim drive motor
  • Solid state water level sensors

Technical Data:

  • Dimensions (Including inlet/outlet pipes) – 635mm wide x 1160mm long x 905mm high
  • Height above water level – (tba shortly)
  • Capacity – 6,600 Imp gallons per hour / 30,000 litres per hour (in gravity mode, pump fed less 25%)
  • Pond Volume – Approx 5,000 UK gallons
  • Bio area – 340 litres @ a fill volume of 66% equates to 225 litres of bio media
  • 3 X 110mm inlets and twin 110mm outlets

Drawing on the experience and knowledge from our commercial development and collaborations we have transferred it to our range of smaller filter products to aid the modern water keeper. The engineering and understanding of how filtration works was developed to produce the stand alone range of filters. Fully curved base to eliminate corners that allow bacterial and debris build up. These units are pretty enough for you not to want to hide them away. These are all built with the outlets to perfectly match the inlets of our bio systems. Providing you with the ultimate flexibility to suit your own individual setup and space.

Features:

  • The remotely sited controller has start / emergency stop buttons and a knob allowing you to change the length of wash. LED indicator shows the length of time between washes in minutes. Option to utilise a forced wash at either 45 or 99 minutes (This is triggered only if an automatic wash has not completed within the specified time). It also has 2 leads – one to plug in to the mains supply (110v and 230v, auto selectable) and one to plug in to the drum. Status of the unit is via 4 colour coded LEDs. We didn’t think we could make it any simpler than that.
  • Fully sealed nylon bodied water valve.
  • Low voltage so that only 12 volts DC is anywhere near your pond water.
  • Designed to run without a noisy and power hungry wash pump in most circumstances (they are available if required). On standby the unit can use less than 1/2 watt and in full wash mode, use 35 watts. It is entirely possible to run it off a car battery for prolonged periods of time.
  • 77 micron stainless steel screen.
  • 2 pin ancillary out from the control box facilitating you being able to utilise to your own requirements.
  • Quick release/change UV Resistant DPM Drum Seal.
  • External short shaft, rim drive motor.
  • Solid state water level sensors.
  • Extra deep waste tray with increased slope.

How does the Draco Drum Bio Unit work?

Operation of the Draco Drum Bio Unit

Draco Drum Bio Unit unit is configured as a downward flow, diverted input unit with longitudinal air delivery, to manage water flow around the chamber, maximising the active volume for bio filtration.

Incoming water at the top will have a tendency to “track” diagonally or straight down to the outlet, the path of “least resistance”. By making it interact with the air from the bottom of the tank, this waterflow is disrupted and forced back upwards.

If part of the incoming flow is diverted towards the centre of the tank, the water is forced into the area where the air is rising, enhancing this flow disruption and pushing the water out to the sides.

As the water is pushed sideways at the surface of the unit, it has no choice but to travel downwards when it hits the side. The bottom of the chamber is curved, helping that downward flow turn into a circulatory movement. When reaching the airbar right at the bottom of the unit, the water is forced back up to repeat the circulation until it exists out of the far end. This curved bottom also eliminates any corners where debris may accumulate.
