Drum Filters Although traditionally more expensive than almost all other forms of purely mechanical filtration, Drum Filters have 2 redeeming features – the ability to consistently filter out particles down to around 50 to 90 microns and to vastly reduce maintenance and cleaning on any filter system they are fitted to. Because they take so much debris out of the water at the beginning of the filtration process, it allows the “back end” or biological part of the filter to work far more efficiently as it doesn’t have to cope with low levels of muck building up on the bacterial surfaces. This also reduces the risk of bacterial infection on your fish as there are fewer places for “bad bacteria” to propogate. The results are almost akin to getting a whole new filter.

How does the Draco Drum Bio Unit work?
Operation of the Draco Drum Bio Unit
Draco Drum Bio Unit unit is configured as a downward flow, diverted input unit with longitudinal air delivery, to manage water flow around the chamber, maximising the active volume for bio filtration.
Incoming water at the top will have a tendency to “track” diagonally or straight down to the outlet, the path of “least resistance”. By making it interact with the air from the bottom of the tank, this waterflow is disrupted and forced back upwards.
If part of the incoming flow is diverted towards the centre of the tank, the water is forced into the area where the air is rising, enhancing this flow disruption and pushing the water out to the sides.
As the water is pushed sideways at the surface of the unit, it has no choice but to travel downwards when it hits the side. The bottom of the chamber is curved, helping that downward flow turn into a circulatory movement. When reaching the airbar right at the bottom of the unit, the water is forced back up to repeat the circulation until it exists out of the far end. This curved bottom also eliminates any corners where debris may accumulate.

The Draco Drum Minima Combi Unit is perfect for quarantines and average stocked ponds upto 2000 gallons. This compact unit is needed where there is very little space as it is only 30.5cm wide. Height above static pond water level is 17.5cm . Media capacity is approximately 40 litres and can take micro K1. An additional bolt on bio unit will be available, allowing the user to seamlessly double the biological capacity of the filter.
